Lanesborough, MA, March 16 - The Town of Lanesborough congratulates the Mikaela Shiffrin family on her officially becoming the greatest ski racer of all time, given her recent record-breaking 87th World Cup win last weekend.

Mikaela’s mother, Eileen Shiffrin, nee Condron, grew up and learned to ski in Lanesborough, inspired by Mikaela’s grandparents, the late Pauline “Polly” and Joe Condron, who also were town residents and avid skiers.

Eileen has played various roles instrumental to Mikaela’s achievements, including mentor and coach. Her family skiing connections to the Berkshires are deeply rooted.  She learned to ski on a field by Prospect Street in Lanesborough, known as “Killer Hill,” joined the alpine ski team at Mt. Greylock High School, from which she graduated in 1977. Her family volunteered at the Mt. Greylock Ski Club, clearing brush and trees on Greylock’s renowned Thunderbolt Trail.   After marriage to Jeff Shiffrin, she skied at Brodie Mountain while pregnant with Mikaela.

Mikaela has often credited her mother and father for their dedication, coaching and traveling with her during her phenomenally successful career.

“We are so proud of Mikaela and the Shiffrin family for their accomplishments,” said Michael Murphy of the Lanesborough Select Board. “It’s wonderful that our small town has been home to a family that produced a champion on the world stage.”

“Miakaela is only 28 years old, and we look forward to her breaking many more records.”
