CHANGE IN PLANS FOR FALL DRAWDOWN
The annual drawdown of Pontoosuc Lake which began on Oct. 15 was disrupted by the heavy rain on the 17th. We had 5” of rain in 24 hours which is the amount of rainfall we normally get in two months. Of course, the lake quickly refilled and there is high volume flow over the dam.
There is a construction project downstream (removal of the Mill St. dam and restoration of natural flow) which restricts our flexibility in releasing water. This project is just below the convergence of the outflows of Pontoosuc and Onota lakes. The original plan was to do the normal drawdown of Pontoosuc and a later drawdown of Onota, but the high rain fall on October 17 required changes.
At this point, we can’t predict what the lake level will be over the next few months as it will be weather dependent. Lakeshore owners should be prepared for little or no drawdown, or drawdown followed by refill, and take appropriate actions now to protect their shorelines and structures.
As plans evolve I will issue updates to this bulletin.
