Most of the homes and businesses around Pontoosuc Lake, and many along Route 7 and its side roads, receive their water through the Lanesborough Village Fire & Water District. The water is provided by two wells off Route 7, which feed into a large storage tank above Prospect St. The water is tested regularly, and thus far has not needed any chlorination or other treatment in order to meet health regulations. This is good water, folks!
The District offices are on Bridge Street. The phone number is 442-5916. FAX number is (413) 395-9721. Collector is in the office on Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Residential un-metered water rates for FY 2015 are $520.00. Bills will be mailed twice a year with vouchers for quarterly payments of $130.00 each. This is similar to your real estate bill.
Metered water rates for FY 2015 are $0.0560 per CF or a minimum of $130.00 Meters are read and billed quarterly.
New Water Storage Tank
The water district has a 300,000 gallon water storage tank at the top of Prospect Street hill. Built when the district was formed in 1938, water gravity fed to the over 850 services throughout the system.
In the summer of 2009 we experienced 2 instances of coliform bacteria counts because of leaks in the tank. This is a violation of the Massachusetts Drinking Water Regulations. An inspection revealed not only leakage, but additional structural deficiencies.
Repair of the tank would be expensive, not eligible for public funding and would not meet the recommended storage capacity of 750,000 gallons. After looking at 9 possible locations for a tank, it was determined that the best place is next to the existing tank.
Estimated cost is $1.2 million. The district has received a 45% grant and a 55% loan of federal stimulus funding from the USDA Rural Development.
Construction was started in the fall of 2011 and is complete on a partially buried cylindrical concrete and steel tank approximately 75 feet in diameter and 25 feet high and should be on-line by the end of summer. The new tank is now in use for all District users.
